New German Manufacture Chronograph With Central Minute Counter
Last month saw the simultaneous release by two competing German brands of a new chronograph calibre with central minute hand. This particular display replicates a function of the legendary and sadly discontinued Lemania 5100: namingly, a central minute counter allowing a more natural reading of measured time than the ubiquitous 30 minutes subdial commonly found [...]
introducing: Orbis Morgan Timepieces
Founded in Hong Kong in 1997 by watch enthusiasts, Orbis Morgan Timepieces specializes in Military-inspired watches. Produced locally with Chinese mechanical movements and sold under USD 300, the watches have earned a solid reputation in Japan. On the photographs, the watches look as good as any reputable brand from Germany or Switzerland. It turns out that [...]
Review: WatchProject’s list of XXI Flieger chronographs
In the article A list of XXI Flieger chronographs, the reader is brought through a little history of standard military watches. The first paragraphs explain the distinction between three main schools: the British, the German and the French; and the text explains how the concept of a Flieger chronograph (as we know it today) was invented in the early 2000′s by the [...]
REQ: a watch that actually feeds off magnetic fields
Magnetic fields are often a headache for watchmakers: they can seriously disrupt the normal running of a watch; and iron-free spring alloys are difficult and expensive to use. The solution which seems most in favor consists in constructing watch cases like magnetic Farraday cages (see our page on antimagnetism). The vulnerabillity of watches to magnetic fields could actually be [...]

First shots of the CREPAS Le Grand
Pablo Calvo, founder of CREPAS watches (Compañìa Relojera Especializada Para Actividades Subacuáticas), contacted me with first shots of his prototype. The reader will keep in mind that this is the first prototype and that production pieces will benefit from further improvements. Trained in finance and holder of an MBA from a Swiss university, Mr. Calvo started [...]

review of the Smiths Military PRS-29
Eddie Platts of Timefactors acquired the rights of British brand Smiths, former purveyor of wrist watches to the military, and released a faithful re-edition of the legendary timepiece. Watcharoo.co.uk published an extensive article about the Eddie Platts re-editions.
Introducing: CREPAS watches
Hat tip to BusinessMontres.com. So, for a change, a new watch brand, obviously for diving… It is with that slightly sarcastic remark that prominent horology journalist Gregory Pons opens the paragraph about the Compañìa Relojera Especializada Para Actividades Subacuáticas, also known as CREPAS. Based in Malaga, Spain, CREPAS watch tried to emulate the look of 1970′s Omega [...]

introducing: VDB watches
The Purists forum features January 2010 pictures of a prototype made by a new German brand called “VDB”. The collection comes in diameter 46 mm and features a vintage GUB Spezimatic calibre. Click here to see the original post at ThePurists.com. Update: here is the link to their Web site.
introducing: Rock Excel Watch
Watch collector Ken Sato once produced what was considered the best hommage to Italian WWII military watches. At some point, he got slapped on the fingers by Officine Panerai for copyright infringment. After several collections inspired by vintage Rolexes, Ken sato did build the Plasmir Milgraph, a watch enhanced with tritium vials and available at the PlasmirMilgraph.com [...]
The dream watch by Kentex
Kentex released a limited series of a 100 pieces of the S526M a titanium watch featuring high antimagnetic shielding (64,000 A/m), self-luminous Tritium vials and housing a Swiss ETA 2824-2. At JP¥ 76,500 a pop, they just sold like hot cakes. Read the full article here.
